PRACTICE TOUR - PART TWO
CONSULTING ROOMS
We
have three consulting rooms. Two are used by the vets and the third
is used by the nurses. They will admit all the in-patients prior to
surgery and deal with a lot of the routine preventative consultations.
Many of these are offered free of charge to our clients and include
obesity clinics, dental problems, post-op checks, free 6 monthly checks
between vaccinations as well as in-depth behaviour problem analysis.
DIAGNOSTIC
ROOM
We
have a large range of hi-tech equipment some of which is stored and
used here.
The
X-Ray machine is a high power unit and is backed up with automatic
processing of the films in the dark room next door. This machine has
many uses but is mainly used for looking at bone roblems such as fractures
as well as chest and abdominal views.

The
ultrasound machine is a very modern unit capable of colour Doppler.
This enables us to look at blood flow directly which means we can
assess heart problems more easily. It is also good for looking at
soft tissue problems such as liver, spleen, kidney and bladder. The
obvious role, as in humans, is for pregnancy diagnosis.
Endoscopes
are flexible fibre-optic tubes which can be used to look down windpipes
to the lungs and down the oesophagus in to the stomach. As well as
being able to look directly at the tissues we can sometimes retrieve
foreign bodies such as stones when they have lodged somewhere they
shouldn't have!!
ECG
(electrocardiograph) machines are used for measuring the electrical
activity of the heart. Some animals develop arrhythmias which means
their heart is beating irregularly. This machine can help tell us
why.
