New ultrasound examination table

We would like to thank the Smith family for their generous donation that enabled us to purchase a new ultrasound examination table. At Summerhill, we perform most of our ultrasound scans without sedating our patients and so we need to ensure that any stress is kept to a minimum. This table has two features that make a significant difference. Firstly, it has an electric lift, so patients can step on to it, and be raised up smoothly and silently. Secondly, it has a custom-made removable ‘cut-out’ which allows us to scan the heart at the same time as we’re scanning the abdomen, so the patient doesn’t have to be repositioned. In loving memory of Barney, Chester, Dudley, Oliver and Ralphie.

Happy Birthday to us!

On the 10th of May 1993, 25 years ago today, Summerhill Veterinary Centre opened its doors for the very first time. Jane Feneley and her husband Dave set up the practice in 1993, with the help of one nurse, Nadine Fletcher, who is still our head nurse today. We’d like to say a big thank you to all our clients, for their loyalty over the years.

Does your dog have smelly breath?

These two handsome housemates came in last week to have their teeth cleaned.

Picture 1) Mild tartar: before and after cleaning.

Picture 2) Significant tartar: before and after cleaning.

Picture 3) This shows how tartar on the tooth can hide problems below. The exposed tooth root meant the tooth had to be removed.

Picture 4) This shows an infected tooth that was very difficult to spot when the dog was awake.

The tubes in the pictures are their endotracheal tubes, which are placed in their airways so that anesthetic gas and oxygen can be administered.
If your dog has smelly breath, book a free nurse appointment and they can advise you on whether your pet needs dental treatment. We
have a subsidised price for a ‘descale and polish’ to encourage early intervention. These two both had to have teeth removed, which could have been prevented if they had had a procedure sooner.
